I’ve come across another amazing flower song and the words are perfect for the bleak day of grey that we are having today. It’s by The Weepies from their Sirens album. Here’s the opening lyrics to the song but check out their video at the end for some really sweet listening!
“When the sky is grey
hope just hides away
I’ll be your sunflower
When you can’t stand up
even love is not enough
I’ll be your sunflower
I shine for
You know I do
anything for you…” (by The Weepies)
So I looked into the meaning of the sunflower and came up with some sunny thoughts. I started with Victoria’s Dictionary of Flowers at the back of Vanessa’s book, The Language of Flowers, and the meaning for sunflower there is “false riches”. Since that left me still feeling a little grey, I looked further and found some warmer messages at a site called Flower Meaning. (You may want to click over to read the entire article since I’ll just copy a few paragraph here from the Sunflower Meaning and Symbolism page.)
Symbolism of the Sunflower
It’s no surprise that both ancient and modern people associated the Sunflower with warmth, positivity, power, strength, and happiness since it bears such a strong resemblance to the Sun itself.
What Does the Sunflower Mean?
The sunflower has developed unique meanings across the world as it spreads in the modern age, but many cultures share similar views of the flower thanks to its physical characteristics. Some of the most common meanings include:
Long life, mainly since most varieties stand in full bloom for months on end during the hottest days of summer
Feelings of adoration, admiration, and platonic love towards a person, such as a family member or friend
Loyalty and strong bonds between two people, as represented by the strong and upright stem
Seeking out positivity and strength, as the bloom turns to face the sun
Nourishing yourself and others, since the sunflower produces an abundance of edible seeds
Brightening your mood, through the vibrancy of the yellow or orange petals
Good luck and lasting happiness, especially in the Chinese culture
The Sunflower’s Message Is…
Stand tall and follow your dreams. Focus on what’s positive in your life and don’t let anyone get you down.
Thank you WEEPIES for such a lovely song!
